Virginia Election Law Changes 2020

Vote by mail

All voters are encouraged to vote by absentee ballot. You can apply online by going to elections.virginia.gov IF you have a valid Virginia driver's license. If you do not have a driver’s license, you can download a paper application or call your local registrar for an application. You may order your absentee ballot now for the Nov. 3rd presidential election. October 23 is the deadline for applying for an absentee ballot. The deadline for registering to vote for the Nov. 3rd election is October 13.

Warning:  If you decide to deliver your absentee ballot in person to the Registrar’s Office rather than mailing it, remember ONLY the voter can submit the absentee ballot. Your husband, your best friend, the nursing home can NOT deliver your absentee ballot for you. It will be thrown away.

No-excuse 45-day early voting

Beginning with the fall 2020 election, Virginia voters can vote in person up to 45 days before the election without having to state a reason.  Montgomery County Registrar Connie Viar will open a voting site for in-person voting in the County Office Building, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg, 45 days before the election.  If the voter is handicapped, there will be a buzzer accessible from outside the county office building.  In person absentee voting ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, the weekend before the Nov. 3rd election.

Election day holiday

The General Assembly has made Election Day a holiday so voting is more accessible for those who work. If you vote on Election Day, you MUST vote in your precinct.

Photo IDs and Voter Registration

Voters do NOT have to show a photo ID.  You can use other forms of identity such as a utility bill with your name and address. Citizens will now be automatically registered to vote at the DMV when they apply for a driver's license—unless they opt out.

Register to vote at https://www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal/, or go to the county registrar's office.

Remember to update your address if you have moved.
